NEWS RELEASE

Milledgeville Housing Authority Starts Rehabilitation/Construction

at Wray Homes and Habersham Apartments

MILLEDGEVILLE, GA – It is a new day for residents of Milledgeville Housing Authority’s 149 public housing units at Wray Homes and Habersham Apartments as rehabilitation/construction begins on December 10. Milledgeville Housing Authority officials have been planning this RAD (Rental Assistance Demonstration) redevelopment for several years to both repair and replace interior and exterior aging issues at these particular properties.

As part of the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development, RAD is an innovative voluntary program that addresses capital improvement, renovation cost and funding requirements for public housing authorities across the country.  It is a broad-ranging effort to preserve federally subsidized affordable housing in a way that positively contributes to local neighborhoods.

“This is a real game-changer for our residents – the first step in our transformation from traditional, obsolete public housing to new modern day, affordable RAD communities,” says Dr. Deborah Arnold-Boyd, Chair of the Milledgeville Housing Authority Board of Commissioners. “This is a tremendous opportunity to be able to significantly revitalize our communities while improving the lives of our residents. We will upgrade the interior of their actual apartments as well as the exterior, which includes enhanced landscaping and lighting.”

Through the utilization of the RAD program, MHA will invest more than $2.3M to convert the Authority’s 149 public housing units at Wray Homes and Habersham Homes. Planned improvements include kitchen upgrades, bathroom fixtures, as well as exterior and landscaping improvements.

“Each day we pride ourselves on providing safe, quality, and affordable housing for our families. We are now finally able to address our long-standing concerns regarding our aged buildings,” says Carrie Jarrett, Vice-Chair of the Milledgeville Housing Authority Board of Commissioners. “We sincerely thank our partners at HUD, the City of Milledgeville, Fyffe Construction, and all the many others who have had a major part in us reaching this point.   Their partnership has made it possible for these true modifications and renovations to be made. We mostly thank our residents for their persistence and patience for the quality housing they work hard for and deserve.”
